Site of the Month - June 2008 by Chuck Moore
Since December of 2005, on a monthly basis, we've been linking to sites we felt deserved an unsolicited pointer. To date, we're simply posted a visual link on the main page of our site and on our links page. With this month's selection, we're expanding our Site of the Month feature to include a bit of commentary on why we feel the site stands out from the crowd.
Journalista - http://tcj.com/journalista/
Growing out of an acquisition of The Nostalgia Journal by Gary Goth and Mike Catron in 1976, the The Nostalgia Journal was reimagined as The Comics Journal with issue number 32 in 1977. The magazine has grown over the years into one of the most respected periodicals of comic journalism. Upholding that 30 year tradition in the age of the internet is Journalista, The Comics Journal Weblog.
Journalista was born when The Comics Journal moved some of it's news coverage to the web in 2006. The site is edited by Dirk Deppey who served as managing editor of The Comics Journal from 2004 to 2006.
Why was this site chosen as a Site of the Month?
When people discuss comic Journalism at its finest, you often hear Journalista pointed to as a must read daily feature. There are a few other sites that really excel in this area (and we'll cover them in future selections) but for this month Journalista gets our top honors.
Updated each week day, the topics covered and the stories pointed out are almost always noteworthy and are presented for the discerning, adult comic reader who's looking for a deeper understanding of the comic form. Whether you're looking for news, interesting reading, solid commentary or simple tips for comic creation, Journalista is a site that should be read and does amazing work on a consistent basis.
For this comic fan, Jounalista is a site I read every day it's updated. I respect blogs, magazines or websites that encourage the reader to expand their comfort zone all the while fairly representing the topic presented. Jounalista is just such a site and the web of comic sites would be all the poorer if it ever went away. |
